About the artist
Sean Downey (b. 1975) received his BFA from the Kansas City Art Institute and his MFA from Boston University. His work uses virtual reality sources built from 3d models and photogrammetry scans, which then get metabolized through the very analog, clunky process of oil painting. This translation from the digital source to the analog painting becomes a way to embed the uncanniness of the virtual world within the gestural physicality and idiosyncrasy of the handmade object. Downey has exhibited widely, and is a founding member of the curatorial collaborative kijidome, winner of the 2015 James and Audrey Foster Prize from the Institute of Contemporary Art, Boston.
